Web Hosting Terms and Definitions
- CGI access
- All of our website hosting accounts feature full cgi access. You may run your cgi scripts from any directory, not just cgi-bin. The only requirement is that all cgi scripts have a .cgi extension (.pl will not work) cgi scripts are programs stored on the server that process data submitted by forms on a web page, and send the data by email, store it in a file, or send html back to the web browser. cgi scripts are used to run message boards, chat rooms, and search engines.

- Data Transfer/Bandwidth
- Data transfer refers to the amount of data that is sent from our server to the web browser. When a web page is viewed, the html files and images must be sent from the server to the viewers web browser. Other files transferred from the server, including CGI scripts, zip files, exe files, will be measured as well. All of our accounts offer unlimited data transfer.

- Domain name
- A domain name allows you to have your own, unique address for your web site. We can host any type of domain name (www.yourcompany.com, www.yourcompany.net, www.yourcompany.org). Network Solutions will bill you $35 for each year ($70 for the first two years must be paid in advance) to have the domain name . If you already have a domain name registered, or are using a different web host, we can transfer your domain name to our servers at no additional cost. Any domain name that can be registered and transferred via InterNIC will be handled by us when you order an account.

- Email Accounts
- A pop email account is a standard email box. Each pop email account has its own login, and password. The address is the same as the login. You can log into a POP email account using any email client. Unlike free email services such as hotmail or yahoo, you are not required to log into a web site to check your email.

- Email Aliases
- An email alias is an address that is not an actual email box, but an alias for another existing email box. For example, you could set up an alias webmaster@yourname.com, and have it forward the mail to your email box johndoe@aol.com. This means that any email sent to webmaster@yourname.com would be placed in your account johndoe@aol.com.

- Email Forwarders
- Email forwarders can be set up on any of your POP email accounts. They simply tell the mail server to send a copy of the mail elsewhere. For example, if you set up a forwarder for you address bob@yourname.com and set it to forward to johndoe@aol.com, then any email sent to bob@yourname.com would have a copy forwarded to johndoe@aol.com.

- Email Autoresponders
- An autoresponder is a feature that allows an email address to automatically send an instand response to the sender of the email that it receives. For example, you may want to have a autoresponder at support@yourdomain.com that immediately sends a response message to the sender stating that the message was received and willl be replied to shortly. You may set up an unlimited number of autoresponders on your account

- FTP access
- FTP (file transfer protocol) allows you to upload or download your files from your computer to our server. You are allowed access to our server via FTP 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You can upload files and update your site anytime you wish.

- Guestbook
- A Guestbook is a feature that allows visitors to your website to leave messages on your site.

- Hit Counter
- A hit counter on your site will tell you how many people have visited a given page on your site. The homepage counter tells you how many people overall have visited your site.

- Microsoft FrontPage 2000 Extensions
- Microsoft FrontPage Extensions can be installed on any account at no charge. These server extensions allow you to take advantage of several special features included with FrontPage-designed web sites: order forms, message boards, guestbooks, counters, and more.

- Server side includes
- Server side includes and cgi scripts are related. A server side include is basically a call to a cgi script from within an html page. For example, you can use SSI for a web counter on your home page, by placing the appropriate code into your html file to call a cgi script and return the numbers from your counter, and display them on the page. The only requirement is that you name the file with an .shtml extension. This will tell the server that it is a server-parsed document. Other uses for SSI include clocks, random text, random images, and more.

- Shopping Cart Software
- A shopping cart allow you to have an online storefront. Your customers would be able to select items on your web site and add them to the shopping cart, then check out and order the items using a credit card.

- SSL Secure Server
- A SSL secure server provides strong encryption for transaction data gathered from you site. Usually used for accepting credit card information for purchases.

- Static IP Address
- A static IP address is are permanently assigned address on the internet. Usually used for servers, printers, VPNs (Virtual Private Networks), etc.

- Subdomain name
- A subdomain name allows you to have a unique name off of an exisiting domain name. Subdomains do not need to be registered with Network Solutions, and there is no $35/year charge.

- UPS Power Failure Backup
- UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) A battery backup source that is used to power servers and remote access equipment that must stay up and running in case of brown-outs or power outtages.

- Website Hits
- Website hits refers to the number of people who have visited your site. Hits are usually tracked using a hit counter on your site.

- Web space
- Web space refers to the amount of storage space you are allocated on our server. It is measured in megabytes (MB). Your web pages themselves (the html files) take up web space. All other files, such as images, CGI scripts, etc, take up web space as well. Our different web accounts offer different amounts of storage space to fit your needs.
