What do I do if I'm not able to send/receive email?

Verify that you have provided a valid "To:" recipient in your email addressing header whenever you are sending an email message. (ie. user@calcon.net)

Ask the sender to verify that they have put your proper email address in the addressing header of their email message if you were expecting mail from someone. The format we use at Caliber Connections is xxxxxxxx@calcon.net. Where "xxxxxxxx" is your logon Id that you chose when you signed up for this service.

For help after you have verified when this happens, call us at 837-7873 or have an online friend email us at the following address for you: support@calcon.net

I think I should be receiving email but I'm not. Are there settings I need to check?

If you haven't been receiving any email and you're sure all the server settings are correct, check the following mail software setting while in the MS mail program: Click the "mail" menu button, select the "options" menu, click on the "read" tab. Is the "check mail every x minutes" setting checkbox on? If not, you have to click the box on until the "x" fills it. Now select an interval, in minutes, that you want your computer to check for mail automatically. When you're done, just click "Ok". That's it. The alternative is to remember to click the "Send and Receive" button every so often. These instructions are for version 3.0 of the Internet Explorer software. If you are a Windows 3.1 user and only have the version of Internet Explorer 2.1, these instructions are a guide because the buttons sometimes have different labels. See our download page to get the customized Caliber Connections software.

US Robotics 33.6 Sportster Modem Settings

We have noticed that some of the factory default settings are causing slow connection speeds. We suggest trying the following 'AT' commands to overcome this problem.
  • 'AT&N16' --------------> Sets the connection speed to 33.6 baud
  • 'AT&B0' ---------------> Sets port speed to follow the connection speed
  • 'AT&W0' ---------------> Saves the new settings to the Modem memory 0.
  • We suggest you enter these as one string -----> 'AT&N16&B0&W0'

I'm concerned about phone costs. What are the actual phone rates in the Chicagoland area?

Many people ask us this question and it really depends upon who is your local phone service with. Using SBC as the benchmarkis not always a good idea. I would suggest that you call your local phone company and ask them if a call from phone number (x) to phone number (y) is a local one. If you do use SBC, check out the following link: http://localcalling.sbc.com.
    OR
Alternately, you can call Ameritech at 1-800-244-4444 and tell them the phone number you are dialing from, and the phone number you're dialing to (847-837-7700).
Just remember, you are ultimately responsible for making sure that the numbers you dial to access our service are local for you.

Why do some sites I visit come up on my screen really fast, while other sites take forever to load?

There are many possible reasons for this. The following are just a few of the prime reasons why there are differences between sites:

    1. On the Internet there are many different types of computer servers types. Some are faster than others from a hardware perspective.

    2. Some sites are very graphic intensive. This causes longer load times for pages from their site.

    3. Some sites are just more popular than others. Standing in line to get a table at a popular restaurant is exactly the same concept that applies here. These are the heavy hitters to remember when your session gets slow. Try coming back to these sites at a later time, and they might be less congested.

I want to upload my web pages using a program called WS-FTP. How do I do it?

    1. Download the WS-FTP program ---> WS-FTP
    2. Install the program.
    3. Run the program and enter the following settings:
              Profile Name: WWW
              Host Name/Address: www.calcon.net
              Host Type: Unix (standard)
              User ID: login name
Password: ****** (put your password in here)
Save Pwd: CHECKED (put check mark in this box)

NOTE: You will see a folder on the right half of the screen named 'public_html'. This is where you want to put all of your files. To open that directory, double-click on 'public_html'. You can then copy files to that area and they should show up when you go to your page (http://www.calcon.net/~login name)
